BlackUrchin.jpg
BlackUrchin.jpg
There was an abundance of black sea urchins too.
BatCaveLookingDown.jpg
BatCaveLookingDown.jpg
As we entered the bat cave I was amazed at how deep the walls of the cave went down below the water line. Before we entered the cave we were swimming in shallow water.
BatCaveExit2.jpg
BatCaveExit2.jpg
As we got closer to the exit of the bat cave I pointed the camera down. This deep fissure made quite a spectacular sight.
BatCaveExit1.jpg
BatCaveExit1.jpg
Deep in the bat cave it was very dark. Then you see the light of the exit. It's quite a spooky experience. In this picture you can see Brendon just ahead (at least you can see the disturbance in the water from him swimming). We met Brendon and his wife Lauren at the resort. They were on their honeymoon. The kind of honeymoon most girls dream of (and guys too I suppose).
Coral.jpg
Coral.jpg
Elkhorn Coral about two meters under the surface.
DiveBoat.jpg
DiveBoat.jpg
On our way back to the dive boat after leaving the bat cave.
TropicalFish.jpg
TropicalFish.jpg
It was a bit difficult getting any good shots of the fish. The wild life has a tendency to dart away just when you press the shutter.
Urchin1.jpg
Urchin1.jpg
I just had to take another picture of a sea urchin. At least they will sit still long enough to get a decent picture. 🙂
Urchin2.jpg
Urchin2.jpg
There were hundreds of sea urchin around the place.
Sea Pearl
Sea Pearl
This is Alex from Indigo Dive with a sea pearl
Seascape
Seascape
The sea bed can look a bit like an alien world
Fish
Fish
There's a great variety of wildlife in the Caribbean. Apparently, more than 700 marine species can be seen around the islands.
Tube Coral
Tube Coral
This comes in blue as well as yellow
Angry Looking Fish
Angry Looking Fish
This guy doesn't look pleased to see me! I think he probably looks that way all the time. Or is it a she? I can't tell.
Heart Urchin
Heart Urchin
This is the urchin's empty shell. Extremely delicate things they are too.
Sea Urchin
Sea Urchin
Another urchin shell I spotted.
Yello Tube Coral
Yello Tube Coral
A clump of tube coral growing out of the sea grass.
Flying Gurnard
Flying Gurnard
I love this shot although I could have done with getting closer. This is a crop from the original photo. The Flying Gurnard is a beautiful looking fish when it spreads its fins out like this. With its fins folded back it's pretty boring and well camouflaged..
Fish Scape
Fish Scape
Another seascape with fish. Don't ask me to identify them; I'm not that good yet.
Spotted Eel
Spotted Eel
At first glance of this photo you might think you're looking at rocks, anemones and a couple of sea fans. But if you look closer you might spot the spotted eel (sorry about the bad pun but I couldn't resist). Take a look near the centre top of the photo.
Cow Fish
Cow Fish
This is the first of a number of photos I got of cow fish. They are a weird creature with distinctive horn like protuberances over the eyes.
Cow Fish Second Shot
Cow Fish Second Shot
I kept trying to get to the side or in front of one of these but they just kept swimming away from me.
Brain Coral
Brain Coral
Unfortunately the focus on this pic isn't too great. I'll do better next time.
Flounder
Flounder
When Alex pointed at the patch of sand in the sea grass I thought he was drawing my attention to something on the edge of it. I was right over this flounder yet it took me a minute to see it.
Another Fish
Another Fish
Another species that I can't yet identify.
Banded Fish
Banded Fish
This looks like it could be a banded butterfly fish but I could be wrong.
Yellotail Snapper
Yellotail Snapper
I quickly snapped this shoal of yellowtails as they passe by.
Yet Another Fish
Yet Another Fish
This is another species that I haven't yet identified.
Smooth Trunkfish
Smooth Trunkfish
Got this shot of a smooth trunkfish as it passed by.
You Lookin at Me?
You Lookin at Me?
Not sure what this is but it definitely had its beady eye on me.
Squid
Squid
When I took this picture I didn't realise that it was a squid. I just saw something interesting and grabbed a snapshot.
Another Squid
Another Squid
I tried very hard to get a decent picture of a squid. Unfortunately, they can swim a lot faster than I can. This is one of the best I managed but it's still a little out of focus.
Blue Cowfish Swimming Away
Blue Cowfish Swimming Away
it seems that Cowfish come in a variety of colours.
Blue Cowfish from the side
Blue Cowfish from the side
This is a better shot of this Cowfish. It seems that blue is a popular colour for Caribbean marine life.
Field of Tube Coral
Field of Tube Coral
I like this shot for its surreal feeling. It seems to emphasise how different the underwater world is to the one we're used to.
Another Flying Gurnard
Another Flying Gurnard
I tried to get a closer picture of a Flying Gurnard so that I'd have a better resolution shot. Unfortunately, the wildlife doesn't always cooperate by staying still and posing. Still, I like this shot as a kind of abstract
Fish
Fish
Normally I can bring back the natural colours in post processing but the sea was so murky and green on these dives that I couldn't quite get the colour just right. Some of these shots don't seem too bad though.
Starfish
Starfish
It didn't seem like there was as much to see as in the Caribbean. There were plenty of starfish around though.
Can I Eat This?
Can I Eat This?
The Ramora seemed very curious about the new aquatic life that suddenly appeared among them.
Another Starfish
Another Starfish
I suppose this picture speaks for itself.
Another Fish
Another Fish
Most of the fish we saw didn't have any really striking markings.
Ramora
Ramora
I decided to take the colour out of this picture completely. It brings out the banding on the Ramora's body.
Fish in Profile
Fish in Profile
I know, it's getting a bit boring looking at this same type of fish but there weren't too many photo opportunities on this dive.
Spanish Hogfish
Spanish Hogfish
Finally I found something with a bit of colour in it.
Grouper
Grouper
On the second dive we took a look around a wreck. Some large grouper had made their homes there. And when I say large, some of these guys were easily four feet long from nose to tail.
Another Grouper
Another Grouper
This shot of a grouper swimming off the edge of the wreck give you some perspective of their size. Unfortunately, they wouldn't let us get close enough for a really good shot and the water was filled with algae bloom.
Blue Tipped Fish
Blue Tipped Fish
I haven't been able to identify this fish but it has an interesting blue tip to its tail. You can see from this picture what conditions were like.
Dolphin
Dolphin
On the trip back from the dive sites we saw a dolphin. It was playing in the water just off some jetty's that belonged to local houses. Some people are lucky enough to have sights like this right outside their back door.
